What is Omega 3?

Omega 3 is an oil/fat that is commonly found in oily fish like salmon.  Many western diets contain omega's but they are the man-made variety called hydrogenated oils.  These are bad for you.

Omega-3 oil/fats also help the blood to remain clot-free (blood clots can cause heart attacks if they block the coronary arteries) and can reduce levels of fat in the blood, another important risk factor for heart disease.

The most likely means by which they protect the heart is by their anti-arrhythmic effect. This means that they help the heart to beat regularly and protect it from arrhythmias - the most serious arrhythmia is ventricular fibrillation, or VF. VF is responsible for many heart disease deaths - the heart loses its co-ordination and stops pumping blood.
